At 36 years of age, Seville-born Patricia Altea heads her own research group on Metabolic Regulation and Signalling in Cancer at Cabimer to understand the causes of the disease.
For the past year, she has been leading her own research group at the Laboratory of Metabolic Regulation and Signalling in Cancer at the Andalusian Centre for Molecular Biology and Regenerative Medicine (Cabimer) in Seville, where she arrived with a Ramón y Cajal contract, which is highly prestigious within the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
This is no small challenge. She has five years of work ahead of her and the challenge of ‘understanding why cancer appears and how we can find solutions to treat each type.’ “It is essential to be able to develop drugs and for therapies to work.
Dr Altea spoke on behalf of women scientists at the national event for the Day of Women and Girls in Science at the Royal National Academy of Medicine. ‘I tell girls that even if they encounter difficulties, they are not alone. There are many women who have travelled this path and are now role models.’
