US study at CABIMER reveals advances in halting DNA deterioration

adminadminJanuary 27, 2026

The team, in collaboration with PharmaMAR, has identified two natural compounds that inhibit a key step in the topoisomerase 1 enzyme. The finding opens up new avenues for researching and treating diseases linked to genetic damage.

The laboratory of Andrés Aguilera, in collaboration with that of Ralf Wellinger (both professors in the Department of Genetics at the University of Seville in CABIMER) and PharmaMAR, has identified two natural compounds, Patulin and Xestoquinol, as new inhibitors of the topoisomerase 1 enzyme, a key component in the proper functioning of DNA. The finding, published in the journal PNAS, opens new doors for understanding and treating diseases related to damage to genetic material.
