Dra. Inés Pineda
Menopause, marked by the cessation of reproductive function, represents a key period in women’s health, with significant implications for the development of future diseases. Studies have already highlighted its association with cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, although the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unknown. After menopause, factors such as blood fat profiles, blood pressure and immune responses undergo drastic changes, influenced by the decrease in oestrogen and changes in other hormones. These hormonal and metabolic imbalances, combined with differences in immune response, contribute to changes in the prevalence and severity of age-related diseases in women.
Despite cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of female mortality worldwide (with 6% more deaths in women than in men in Spain), a gap in biomedical research persists. Women are underrepresented in both preclinical research and clinical trials, leading to the extrapolation of results obtained in men or male models. To address this inequality, the Metabolism, Immunology and Cardiovascular Risk Group, led by Inés Pineda-Torra, who has extensive experience in this field, has generated cohorts of women before and after menopause and analysed them using cutting-edge high-performance technologies, artificial intelligence and machine learning models. Our goal is to identify molecular profiles characteristic of cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women and to develop new tools for early personalised diagnosis and improved treatment accuracy and, in the long term, women’s health.
Your participation can make a difference. With your help, we not only advance science, but also take another step towards a future in which more women live healthy, informed and protected lives.
